Short names, hot off the press
Generate short, punchy names for brands, startups, apps and projects. Filter by length and style — real words, invented words or compounds — then copy or download your shortlist. Everything runs 100% in your browser: no sign-up, no server, nothing stored.
Real words are familiar, invented words are ownable, compounds split the difference. Compare the strategies.

Honest limits — read before you use these
- These are starting ideas, not cleared names. A generated name may already be trademarked, registered as a domain, or in use by an existing business.
- Always check before you commit: search the name, check domain availability, and run a trademark search in your country. For anything commercial, consider a proper clearance search.
- Short names collide more often. There are only so many 4-letter combinations — assume your favorite is taken until proven otherwise.
- Generation is local and random; we never see or store what you generate.
How the press works
Three typefaces of names roll off this press: real English words, invented coinages and two-part compounds. A small JavaScript file sets the type — no accounts, no network calls.
Real-word names
Short, familiar English words — Bloom, Flint, Wren. Instant meaning, but often taken.
Invented names
Coined from syllable parts — Velora, Nexum. Highly ownable, no built-in meaning.
Compound names
Two short parts fused — Swiftlane, Novahub. Descriptive and usually available.
Private by design
crypto.getRandomValues() randomness, all local. Close the tab and the names are gone.
When to reach for short names
Short names earn their keep wherever space is tight and memory matters.
Company names
One-word brands are the most ownable. Generate a batch, then clear your favorite.
Apps & tools
App icons and domains reward brevity — short names fit everywhere.
Side projects
Give the weekend project a real name and it stops feeling like a folder.
Teams & newsletters
Internal tools, clubs and newsletters all deserve better than "Project Final v2".

What is a short name generator? +
A short name generator produces brief, memorable name ideas — typically one word of 3 to 8 letters — for brands, startups, apps and projects. This one offers real words, invented coinages and compounds, with length and starting-letter filters.
Can I use a generated name for my business? +
Only after checking. The names are ideas, not cleared trademarks. Search the name, check domain availability, and run a trademark search before using any name commercially. Our mistakes guide covers the full checklist.
Real word, invented or compound — which is best? +
There is no universal best. Real words are instantly understood but hard to own; invented words are ownable but start meaningless; compounds split the difference. Compare the three strategies.
Why are short names so often taken? +
Simple math: there are only 456,976 possible 4-letter combinations, and far fewer pronounceable ones. Assume your favorite short name is taken until you verify otherwise.
Is the generator private? +
Yes. Plain JavaScript in your browser using crypto.getRandomValues(). Nothing is sent over the network, no cookies are set, nothing is stored. See our privacy page.
Do I need an account? +
No. No sign-up, no email, no download. Open the page, set your filters, and print names.
